Many years have past since William James spoke these words. Research conducted in the field of psychology and neuroscience (e.g. M. Seligman, K. McGinogal , A. Crum) suggests that he was right!
The way we think does indeed determine how effective we are in managing stress. It turns out that our mindsets play an important role in our health and wellbeing.
This is great news! It means that we can start taking control over our health and wellbeing by changing the way we perceive and give meaning to stressful situations. Or as William James put it: by “choosing one thought over another”.
