Everyday Resiliency @ Work - How to Bounce Back in the face of Daily Hassle

Ever found yourself ruminating on something that happened? Or excessively worrying about a future situation or event? Examples include:

  • Worrying and feeling anxious about your job security with all these organizational changes going on around you

  • Feeling a suffocating pressure to perform at today’s team meeting, where you’re supposed to present the quarterly results

  • Repeatedly going over the argument you had with your spouse this morning, feeling a mix of anger, guilt and anxiety, wondering where it went wrong and what you could have done differently

Research suggests that it’s beneficial to process and reflect on our negative feelings; it helps us to regulate our emotions, which in turn is important for being effective at work, for forming relationships and for maintaining our physical health.

But…getting caught in the loop of repetitive, painful thoughts actually interferes with this process.

Gaining perspective on negative events in your life - whether they’re events with a capitol letter E, or small, daily hassles and challenges- can improve your mental wellbeing in general and your resilience in particular.

I have used variations of this exercise many times in my work as a coach and as a psychologist and I’ve seen people transform as a result.

For Individuals

Does this sound like something you could benefit from? If so, I’m inviting you to start using this exercise to gain perspective on small, daily challenges you face at work.

  • You might be anxious about an upcoming performance review at work

  • Or maybe you can’t let go of the embarrassing encounter you had with a co-worker at a restaurant after you had one drink too many…

  • Or do you feel guilty because you’re working late again and had to ask the babysitter to stay an hour longer

As you practice this skill you’re in fact training your brain to take on a different perspective on negative events, which is one of the things that helps build our resilience.

Are you ready to try?

If this particular exercise doesn’t resonate with you, don’t worry! This is just one of many ways in which you can start training your brain to gain perspective on negative events and to stay on top of our game at work and at home.
